After the American Civil War, the Baltimore Gun Club proposes an audacious plan: build a massive cannon to launch three men to the Moon. When the club's president, his rival, and a French adventurer volunteer for the journey, they must solve the problem of surviving the explosive acceleration. The projectile launches successfully, but their fate remains uncertain until the sequel reveals their voyage through space.
