What it's about

The golden journey of Mr. Paradyne by William John Locke is a literary novella written in the early 20th century. It explores a brilliant but spiritually numb London barrister who slips out of suburban respectability and, under the spell of a haunting flageolet melody, stumbles into a vagrant life on the French roads. The likely topic is a transformation from duty-bound convention to an awakened pursuit of beauty, freedom, and desire. Cosmo Paradyne, K.C., wakes before dawn in a hawker’s caravan near Chartres with no clear memory of how he got there, a silver flageolet in his pocket, and months missing from his life. Tracing fragments, he recalls the mysterious young street musician whose unearthly tune lured him from Ealing, a lost stretch of wandering in France, and the practical proofs that he has been living as a travelling pedlar. In Chartres he tastes fierce health, the rapture of the cathedral’s light, and a sudden, sensual awareness that exposes the aridity of his marriage to Martha, who, in a curt telegram, dismisses his tale and has already concealed his absence as a “breakdown.” Torn between duty and the new life, he plays the tune through, recovers the moment he won the flageolet as a minstrel’s prize, and remembers an invitation to journey on through France, Italy, and Sicily. At moonrise and into dawn he harnesses his horse, turns south, and chooses the golden road—renouncing forever the sterile security he leaves behind.
