"The Innocents Abroad" by Mark Twain is a travel book published in 1869. It humorously chronicles Twain's five-month voyage through Europe and the Holy Land aboard the steamship Quaker City in 1867. Twain contrasts his experiences with grandiose contemporary travelogues, satirizing fellow travelers, profiteering locals, and the commercialization of history. He particularly scrutinizes the gap between romantic expectations and reality, from trivial anecdotes at Gibraltar to disillusionment in the Holy Land.
