He falls deeply in love with Pelagie, the celebrated beauty of St. Louis, and pursues her across America and Paris. Their romance becomes entangled with dangerous political intrigue involving Napoleon and the signing of a great treaty. Upon returning home, the heartbroken hero discovers that love and fate have taken an unexpected turn.
